Tips to Keeping Your Heart Healthy

There are a variety of things that you can do to keep your heart healthy and happy throughout your lifetime. We suggest that you always talk with your doctor before changing your eating or exercise habits, but below we have outlined some ways that you or your loved one can change your life in order to achieving a healthier heart.

  • Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables

    • Keep in mind that the different colors of veggies signal the different nutrients in them that you need. By eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables you can make sure that you’re getting all the vitamins and minerals that your heart needs to remain healthy.

  • Exercise

    • Make sure to exercise 2-3 times a week. Exercise can come in many forms. Yoga is something we provide at Renaissance because it increases flexibility and decreases risk of injury while doing other activities. Taking a walk outside while being mindful to let someone know where you’ll be going and taking a cellphone in case of emergencies is another great option. There are many different things you can do to increase your exercise- just make sure to check in with your doctor before you begin anything new.

  • Decrease sodium intake by limiting how much prepackaged food you’re eating

    • At Renaissance we make this suggestion easy. With our farm-to-table dietary approach, we try to cut out packaged food as much as possible. Our chefs prepare fresh cooked meals for our Members every day. When Members are eating for themselves, they should keep this in mind, however. Try to stay away from already pre-packaged food because the pre-packaging process involves using high amount so sodium to preserve the food for a later consumption.

  • Get regular checkups

    • By checking in regularly with your doctor you are able to keep track of what you need to be doing to help keep your heart healthy. Sometimes that will mean changing your diet. Sometimes you will need to increase or decrease the amount of exercise that you are doing or what type of exercises you are doing. By keeping a good relationship with your doctor, you are better able to modify your life that you are staying as healthy as possible.
